For the (Rekindled) Love of Cinema

Sometime before 2020, I stopped watching movies with a critical eye. I no longer sought after the hidden art house gems, the cult classics or the films that my favorite writers and creators mention as influential.

My life has changed so much over the past few years that I’m not even able to sit for a few hours and watch a movie from start to finish. This is not a complaint. With my current set of life responsibilities, it’s just how my time is structured.

Recently I caught wind of the Criterion Collection 50% off sale at B&N. While working remotely at the B&N Cafe, I took a break and decided to look through their offerings.

I simply don’t have the bank account for the number of films I wanted to buy.

I don’t normally blind-purchase DVDs. If I’m committing money to the purchase of a movie, I will have seen it first. In this case, I was able to control myself, because you know… bank account. My curiosity was piqued, however.

So, that night I started a list.

There are so many movies I’ve missed over the last decade, and so many others that have flown under my radar that I feel like I’m starting from square one. I have so many interests and films that I want to see that it’s actually driving me crazy. My list has grown to over three-dozen titles… so far.

Since summertime is when I really ramp up the cyberpunk consumption, I’ve decided to prioritize the titles on my list that are cyberpunk, including any old anime. Titles include the black and white version of Johnny Mnemonic (1995), Tetso: The Iron Man (1989), and the anime classics Cyber City Oedo 808, S_erial Experiments Lain_(1998), and Akira (1988).

Not sure when I will be able to watch all of these, but I’ll have to find a way.
