For seven strait days I wrote a blog post every day. My goal is to write a blog post every day for the month of July. The plan is to keep a regular writing habit, and to build my writing muscle.
From these first seven days, reading back on my work, I have a lot of learning to do.
What I’ve learned from my first seven days is there are a lot of issues I need to work through if I’m ever going to be satisfied with my writing output. From pacing, coherent thought, and general interest, my effort is to work through all of that if I want to achieve a higher level of writing.
My job is to give you a reason to read my words, to take in the essays and make you think. These past seven blogs don’t do the trick, and that’s okay, because I don’t know what I’m doing, but that’s why I’m here… I’m here to work all of this out.
A comedian just doesn’t have a one-hour special globally televised. They spend at least a year working out the material in smaller venues.
In the past few months, I’ve been reading the essays of Harlan Ellison, Nnedi Okorafor, Spider Robinson, Ursula Le Guin, and David Sedaris. I know I shouldn’t expect to write on their level, because they are professional and have decades of experience writing fiction and nonfiction, but there is inspiration in their writing. I need to see into the matrix of their story construction, patterns, and different ways of seeing.
Then it hit me… it would be like expecting someone with NO experience to create high level graphic design. I can create that level of design work, because I’ve been doing it for close to 30 years.
So, it just takes time and practice. I’m satisfied that I did it seven days in a row. Onward to the next seven.
