Outpost Parallax is a weekly Saturday night musing of all things science fiction.
Since I’ve been on a serious cyberpunk kick lately, I’ve decided to return to the world of Neo-Tokyo for the groundbreaking 1988 anime film, Akira.
It’s been far too long since I’ve watched Akira, and I think I’ve only seen it once as an adult.
I first encountered Akira in college in 1995, after seeing clips of it being shown at a local film festival. I couldn’t stop talking about how cool the clips were, and my roommate knew what movie it was from. We rented it that night, and I was just as blown away as I was watching Robot Carnival and Vampire Hunter D, which was part of the original Sci-Fi Channel’s “Adventures in Japanese Animation” which debuted in 1993.
Now I will watch it with a critical eye, and look past all the cool visuals, and really take in the structure and the true substance of the story.
