Thirty-One Days

Thirty-one days, thirty-one blog posts. I really didn’t think I could do it, yet here I am, composing number thirty-one right now.

I learned a lot about myself from writing a daily blog post. Let me break it down:

For starters, I learned that I really could create a daily writing habit. I challenged myself to post a daily blog, and not just a slice-of-life, but to write about actual topics that I have to think about. I tried to show actual competence in writing. The point of challenging yourself is to see if I can get it done, or at least see how far I could get.

There were days I didn’t feel like writing. They were few and far between, but I managed to push through, because I wanted to see my goal realized. I didn’t want to break the streak over something lame like “I didn’t feel like writing.”

I realized that I was writing to myself. As much as I’d love to have a lot of readers, and be part of a community that fosters this type of thing, I know it’s not out there, so in a way, I’m creating that support for myself. I don’t have analytics, but I’m aware that a blog post here or there was at least looked at.

One thing I thought would happen is that I’d run out of things to blog about, but I didn’t. I had an idea every single day, as well as several ideas on-deck. This was surprising to me, because historically I’m shy, and that extends to what I post online. I guess there really is no excuse now.

What the future holds is this: I’m definitely going to blog on a regular basis moving forward. It won’t be daily, but I’ve gained an unprecedented amount of momentum, and I don’t want to lose it. August will be a seriously crazy month for me, so I’m enjoying this calm before the storm. This coming month I’ll continue to focus on creativity, writing and especially science fiction.

This past month has given me a lot to think about, so I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to more.
