WARNING: Spoilers Ahead
Quick Review: Spider-Man: Brand New Day was FUN! It was also emotional and engaging.
Tom Holland has been Spider-Man for ten years and seven movies, in four of those movies his Spider-Man character has been the star. From his introduction in Captain America: Civil War in 2016 to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I can say that I’ve really enjoyed Holland’s evolution of Spider-Man. On that same note, I can appreciate what Marvel Studios has done with Spider-Man.
With Hulk, Punisher and Black Widow all playing pivotal roles, I feel it’s similar to Civil War in that their inclusion really puts the overall view of the MCU into perspective, and sets the stage for the Mutant Saga, which I’m very excited about. The way Jean Grey was portrayed, and how her story and powers were introduced, I think Disney is on the right path to making X-Men movies that I’ve been waiting for.
Spider-Man was never a comic favorite of mine. I had read and collected some here and there, but X-Men was my jam when I was reading and collecting comics during the boom of the early 90s. It’s funny that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every Spider-Man film (yes, even Spider-Man 3) and I’m locked-in to the current run of Spider-Man, but deeply dislike the X-Men films.
As an overall film, this was a treat to watch on screen. There were a lot of great shots, and obvious nods to various iconic comic book covers, and the slow-motion stunt work was incredible. The Punisher shoot repeatedly at Hulk, especially at close range is very fun to watch. The story and script were well-paced, and the acting was on-point. Sadie Sink made an excellent Jean Grey. It was very entertaining to see Spider-Man and the Punisher arguing like typical guys from Queens.
