Stuart Fails to Save the Universe seems to be generally well liked amongst the fandom. I watched the first episode, and it did not resonate with me.
The Big Bang Theory didn’t resonate with me during it’s original run. I didn’t watch it in its entirety until a few years ago. I always felt like the characters didn’t evolve, and while I understand that the four main “geeks” of the show are caricatures of geeks, it still felt inauthentic, and was trying too hard. I’ve changed my opinion a little after my original viewing of The Big Bang Theory even though I don’t think they shed that inauthentic vibe.
This inauthentic feeling came through during my viewing of the first episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
Stuart was my least favorite character in The Big Bang Theory for various reasons. I felt like they didn’t know what to do with the character. Stuart didn’t contribute anything other than reinforcing the typical comic book geek loser trope. We already had several other characters who were dealing with similar tropes. Stuart went from going on a date with Penny to playing nanny to the Wolowitzes.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe didn’t resonate because it’s still trying to be geek chic. There are reviews that are claiming that this is a bold and creative direction for the show. This is the only positive thing I can say about this first episode. That alone doesn’t inspire me to keep watching.
The show also includes John Ross Bowie’s Kripke, another character I never cared for. While I think Brian Posehn is funny, and I get his whole ‘dry delivery’, thing is what makes him funny, but he’s delivering his lines like he doesn’t want to be there. Lauren Lapkus is geat in everything.
Now that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has been renewed for a second season, I’m not sure if I’ll keep watching. If I do, it will be out of morbid curiosity.
